Special thanks to Richard Vacca from Boston who contributed articles and reviews published by Metronome and Down Beat in the late 1940s, the 1950 and the early 1960s.

1949:
  • [R] Serge Chaloff/Ralph Burns Septet: King Edward the Flatted Fifth (C+) | Pat (B-), Motif 002, Metronome, October 1949, p27
1950:
  • [R] Charlie Mariano Octet: Sheba (B) | Babylon (B), Motif 004, Metronome, May 1950, p43, "Boston baked bop, clean and clever in a Miles Davis mold, with only a tuba missing to make Miles's sound really stick. The leader's alto, Mert Goodspeed's trombone, Don Stratton's trumpet, and Nat Pierce's piano deserve recognition. The ensemble is unusually precise for their kind of skipping line."
1951:
  • [R] Nat Pierce Orchestra: The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (B-) | You Don't Know What Love Is (B-), Motif 006, Metronome, May 1951, p27
  • [R] Nat Pierce Orchestra: Seersucker Blues (B-) | Might as Well Be Spring (B-), Motif 007, Metronome, May 1951, p27
  • [F] Hentoff's Boston news: Charlie Mariano at Primo's in Lynn, with Sonny Truitt, Jack Lawlor, Elliott Kaplan, "the best local unit now working here." Mariano to record for Prestige. Down Beat, Vol. 18, No. 24, November 30, 1951
1952:
  • [F] Hentoff's Boston news: Altoist Mariano Cuts Sides For Prestige. The major recording event of the Boston jazz year took place a few weeks ago when altoist Charlie Mariano assembled 10 of the section's best modernists for an eight-side date on the Prestige label. Joe Gordon, Sonny Truitt, Jim Clark, George Myers (baritone), Roy Frazee and Dick Twardzik (piano), Jack Lawler (bass), Gene Glennon and Carl Goodman (drums). Mariano leads band at Melody Lounge in Lynn, the only consistent local bastion for modern jazzmen, including Truitt, Danny Kent, Jimmy Felton, Ray Oliveri. Down Beat, Vol. 19, No. 2, January 25, 1952

1954:
  • [F] Hentoff's Boston news: Charlie Mariano, Vol 1 and Vol 2, Imperial LPs 1M-3006 and 3007, 4 stars. Despite the mediocre sound quality, "this is really a remarkable illumination of Boston's jazz talent. Stan Kenton's new altoist has never sounded better on record and yet he's overshadowed by brilliant trumpeter Herb Pomeroy, who misses only in the occasional edginess of his tone." These records also underlie the major gifts of pianist Jackie Byard, 18-year-old drummer Pete Littman, and bassist Jack Carter." Down Beat, Vol. 21, No. 2, January 27, 1954
